Wolf Weekly Newsletter

Wolf Weekly

Hello Lake Ridge Middle School Parents/Guardians – We are excited to see all of our students’ smiling faces tomorrow morning.  Please double check to make sure your student has everything they will need before they leave the house in the morning.  Allow extra time and patience!!

SCHOOL IMMUNIZATIONS

At the direction of Superintendent McDade, the deadline for immunization compliance has been extended to December 14, 2022.  All students are welcomed to attend beginning August 22.

SCHEDULES

Student class schedules were made available August 19th.  It is helpful to the students and front office staff if they write their schedules down in their notebooks for easy reference.  There will be extra adults in the hallways assisting students find their classrooms.  The front lobby will have student’s 1st Period classes posted for students that cannot remember.  The 1st Period teachers will give each student a printed copy of their schedule.

CELLPHONES

With technology in mind, a growing body of research is pointing to instances in which cell phone addiction is leading to a negative impact on some students’ learning, sleep habits, and mental health. Certainly, at LRMS, we saw an uptick in students’ distraction during class as a result of cell phone use.

In response to this problem, cell phone use will not be permitted in classrooms at LRMS this school year. At the start of each day, our teachers will ask students to store cell phones out of sight for the duration of the day. If a student needs to use technology for an assignment or project, laptops will be their primary tool, unless a teacher specifically designs a task intended for cell phones. We appreciate parents’ and guardians’ support in ensuring students can focus on learning throughout the school day. If you have an emergency, and need to reach your student, please call the office and we can assist in getting information to your child.

DRESS CODE

If a student chooses to wear a hoodie, hat, or a jacket with a hood, it is expected that their hood be down when inside the building.  Teachers and staff will be reminding students to remove their hoods/hats if seen in the hallways.  We ask that you remind your students to follow the rules and directions given by school staff and not become argumentative.

TRANSPORTATION

Bus Riders

Bus schedules are available in ParentVue.  Please take a moment and check ParentVue/StudentVue to find the most up-to-date bus information.  We ask that parents exercise patience during the first week as the Transportation Department and bus drivers work out the kinks in the routes and schedules.  It is a possibility that busses may be late to the designated stops.  It is highly recommended to download and use the Here Comes the Bus app available at site://www/departments/transportation/here_comes_the_bus  The county/school code is 76348.

If you have questions or concerns about busses, please call The PWCS Transportation Department at 571-374-6591 or email Transportation at [email protected].  Lake Ridge Middle School cannot reach the bus drivers directly to see where they are.  Please keep in mind that the Transportation Department does receive a high volume of calls and you may have to sit on hold, however our front office does not have a direct line to their office to get information any faster.

Car Riders

Parents, if you are driving your student(s) to school, please enter in from the 2nd entrance to the school which is located by the football field.  Once you pull in, and come to a complete stop, please drop your student off; having them walk a little bit is a great way to get the blood flowing and their mind awake before school.  By doing this, you help to move the traffic in and out of the school in a quick and efficient manner.  If you wait until you pull up to the front door, traffic gets backed up both ways on Mohican Rd.  Parents should not be dropping students off in the large upper parking lot.  The entrance next to the electronic marquee is for busses and staff only. As always, please allow extra time and drive cautiously in the parking lot.

Please see the attached map showing how to enter and exit the car rider line.

LANG/LIT SUPPORT COURSE

This year we added an additional course that you may see appear on your student’s schedule that you’re not familiar with. Both students in 6th & 7th grade may notice a Lang/Lit Support course. The purpose of this course is help students gain and expand their knowledge and skills in both reading and writing and provide more time for deeper instruction of the Language Arts curriculum while making cross-curricular connections. This is not a remedial class, but will support our students in Language Arts instruction and writing.

BACK TO SCHOOL PACKET

Please make sure to login to your ParentVue account and complete the 2022-23 Back to School Packet (Returning Students).  This allows you to make updates to your student’s emergency contacts, phone numbers, email addresses, etc…  Once logged into ParentVue, select Online Records and choose the Back to School packet from the dropdown menu.

REPORTING ATTENDANCE

In an effort to make the process more efficient, we have altered the method(s) for reporting absences and other attendance to the school.  ParentVue should be used to report FULL-DAY absences for the current day and/or future days (up to 30 days in advance). We have also setup a designated email for reporting absences.  The new email address is [email protected].  You can use the email address to report full-day absences (previous, current day, or future), late arrivals, and/or early dismissals.  Visit https://lakeridgems.pwcs.edu for more information.

CAFETERIA

This year all breakfast and lunch items are available for purchase, unless you apply for and receive qualification for your meals to be free through the PWCS Food & Nutrition webpage. You can also find purchasing information and menus.  Breakfast is $1.50 and Lunch is $2.65.  Your child will need to know and be able to type in their student number for both the free and paid meals. This is their student identification number (POSID), found on Parent/StudentVUE. For our younger students, we highly encourage families to spend some time this week practicing on a keypad, similar to the one shown below, so they can move easily through the lunch line.

ATHLETICS

Athletic Physical and Concussion Training:

This is a reminder that all Student-Athletes must have an updated, after May 1st, 2022, Athletic Physical and have completed the Concussion Training online or in person before the start of tryouts on August 23rd. Previous Athletic Physicals and Concussion Training are invalid for the current season. You will only need to file ONE Athletic Physical and Concussion Training for the entire 2022-2023 school year. For access to the Athletic Physical Form and Concussion training please visit site://www/academics___programs/student_activities/student_athletics/index. As we approach the beginning of the school year, please note that the Online Concussion Training will be blocked during school hours, 8 am to 3 pm; you will need to wait until after 3 pm to complete the Online Training. To ensure the smoothest transition, please keep ALL forms together (physicals and concussion training certificate). Emailed forms will NOT be accepted, you must drop off the hard copy at the main office or have the athlete bring it with them on August 22nd.

Student-Athletes can turn in their Athletic Physical and Concussion Training before or after school on Monday, August 22nd, and before school on Tuesday, August 23rd to Mr. Larson in Room 1602 or the main office. To ensure all forms are received please do not turn in your forms to any teachers, the first few days are incredibly chaotic and we do not want your athlete to miss tryouts because of a misplaced form. Thank you.

Tryouts

As a reminder Fall Tryouts (Girl's Volleyball, Girl's Track, Boy's Soccer, and Football) will begin on August 23rd from 3:15 to 5:15. Cheerleading will hold tryouts from August 24th through the 26th. Athletes should bring/wear proper athletic attire for their sport (athletic shorts, sneakers/cleats, and an appropriate shirt), they will have an opportunity to change in the locker room before tryouts begin. Coaches will be checking an updated Eligibility List at the beginning of practice to see if the updated Athletic Physical and Concussion Training have been completed before trying out. If they are missing any part, they will not be able to try out until all paperwork has been submitted. To ensure a fair and equitable tryout for all athletes, all tryouts and practices are closed to the public per Prince William County Public Schools Policy. Please respect all athletes participating in that sport as some athletes might be nervous during the tryout process. Thank you for understanding. You can turn your ATHLETIC Physical and Concussion Training in at any time prior to tryouts. If your athlete is planning to play a Spring sport, they do not have to wait until March tryouts. Please contact the Athletic Director, Mr. Larson with any questions.
