Author Jay Miletsky with Featherstone ES third-grade students in classroom.Students in Amanda Wilkins’ third-grade class at Featherstone Elementary received a special visit from author Jay Miletsky, who shared his experiences as a writer. The discussion was focused on his book, “Ricky, the Rock that Couldn't Roll.”

Miletsky worked in business before switching careers to become an author. “Ricky, the Rock that Couldn't Roll” is great for teaching students about friendship, perseverance and triumph in the face of adversity.

“Students were mesmerized by Miletsky's focus on being kind and persevering. His personal story about having a child with special needs brought meaning to his choice to become a writer,” Wilkins explained.

Miletsky’s presentation was interactive. Students put the knowledge they gained into action by writing their own paragraphs, after Miletsky gave them a sentence starter.

In addition to being an author, Miletsky works as an adjunct professor, teaching online business and social media marketing for the Pratt Institute.

Miletsky recently visited Potomac View Elementary too. Not only did he read to the first-graders, but also discussed the theme of “Ricky, the Rock that Couldn't Roll” and how it applies to the lives of students.
