Two Brentsville District High School seniors and two Bristow Run Elementary fifth-grade students are winners in this year’s Youth Art Month flag contest, sponsored by the Virginia Art Education Association.

More than 200 students from across Virginia submitted entries to the annual competition which asks for designs that combine imagery representing the state of Virginia, the Youth Art Month logo and the contest theme; The theme this year was “Your Art, Your Story.”

In the High School division, Brentsville’s Anna Mentzel took first place, and Emily Polen was fourth. Both students used colored pencil and ink as the mediums for their designs. The students are taught by Cheryl Miehl.

In the Elementary School category, Bristow Run’s Olivia Kim took first-place honors and Marcus Burlson was selected as 2nd place winner. The students are taught by Karen White.

“I tie this competition to my instruction and curriculum very easily,” shared Bristow Run Art Teacher Karen White. “We have many state art standards which are introduced, reviewed, and mastered during the process of creating the flag design.”

Youth Art Month is observed in March. The Youth Art Month Flag Contest is one of the activities designed to promote the importance of arts education and to increase awareness of and support for the arts among students, their families, the community.
