Former member of Prince William County School Board passes away

John Harper Jr. at CHES ribbon cuttingJohn Harper Jr., former member of the Prince William County School Board, passed away last weekend. Covington-Harper Elementary School was named, in part, for Harper.

“Mr. Harper spent a life devoted to his family, country, and Prince William County,” said Ron Whitten, principal of Covington-Harper. “I have spent the last two years getting to know a man who was truly honored to have a school named in his honor. As often as he could, he visited the school and always enjoyed spending time with the students and staff."

Harper was the first African-American elected in Prince William County. He also served in the U.S. Army and worked for Prince William County.

His funeral service will be held Friday, February 15, at 11 a.m. at First Mount Zion Baptist Church located in Dumfries.
