Hello to All of My Orchestra Students and Families!

I miss seeing all of you and working with you in person in class with our music and instruments.  Below are some guidelines for you and orchestra while we are not in school at the present time.

COVID-19 Pandemic School Closing

School Owned Instruments
The closing of school has been so quick and new.   Some of you are asking about how you are going to return school owed instruments.  The music teachers have not received formal instruction of how this will be done.   Until then, please keep practicing and have fun playing your instrument.   If you know you are going to move in the near future, please email me at vonberka@pwcs.edu

Refunds for Solo and Ensemble
I know many of you paid the $9.50 Solo and Ensemble Fee.   You will receive your money back.   I don't know when or any further details because the school closing is so new to us all.    I will let you know as I know more.

Practicing
During this time off of school, orchestra students should be practicing their instruments a few times per week.  See below for a description of what you should be practicing so that you do not lose any skills we have been working on in class.

Schoology
I will be posting through Schoology for suggested activities to work on while we are out of school.   I will also post some videos on different things such as tuning your instrument--This will be especially helpful for my 6th grade students.   I am going to list some tuner and metronome apps your could download and look into to help you with tuning your instrument.

You can always email me with any questions you have or if you need help with something.  My email address is vonberka@pwcs.edu.   I enjoy hearing from my students.

I am going to try and do a group practice for my different levels with an app called Zoom.   It is free for the next three months.   If your parents are in agreement with you using this app, we can try and practice in our green books together.   We can also try playing concert music you already have.   This would be a great way to keep up our playing skills!

Apps
There are also several apps I will post on Schoology that we can try using for fun.   One of them is called Gimkit.   It is where I can pick a time to play and any student wishing to join in, can.   I will have to let you know in advance so you know what time to tune in with your cell phone or computer.

FlipGrids
I have also put up a "Resumbit" folder and a "Late Work" folder so you can catch up on any work that you had not previously turned in before March 13, 2020.   I am still grading a bunch of Flip Grids so check your grades from time to time to see what you may want to Resumbit.    If you did not submit a Flipgrid, in the hub, it will be listed as "Not Handed In".   If for some reason your video did not open for me, I have put in the comments "No Evidence".  You will need to resubmit these assignments if you fall into this category.

Keep checking back on Schoology in the coming days for more info.   Until then, below are a few websites offering free trials.  Stay well and play your instrument.   I miss you all and look forward to seeing you again sooner rather than later.

Musically,
Ms. vB

SmartMusic (offering free trials)

Go to SmartMusic.com and sign up for a free trial.  This website gives you practice tools (metronome, tuner, etc.) and assigns you music to practice.  You can record yourself and the website will give you feedback on your playing.  This is also a great website to help you with your sight reading!

Music Racer

Interactive site where you play games to practice music notation and terminology.   MusicRacer.com

MusicTheory.net

This site will give your practice on music theory (note reading, intervals, composition, etc.)

Welcome to Orchestra!
string instruments
I believe learning an instrument will benefit you in various aspects of your life.  It connects you to a group that you may continue with all through your school years. It helps to teach you self discipline and critical thinking skills.  It is also fun and something you can carry with you your entire life.

This year we will be building on the skills you have learned in previous years playing your instrument.

I attended The American University-Washington D.C. My major instrument is Double Bass.  I studied with H. Stevens Brewster, Principal Bassist of the National Symphony Orchestra.   I received my master's degree in education at George Mason University.  I maintain a private bass studio as well as teach mandolin. When I'm not teaching school, I play with Old Bridge Chamber Orchestra.

You can contact me on my email at vonberka@pwcs.edu
